Is chewing ice bad for your teeth?
After seeing one more patient with broken tooth, I decided it was time to bring attention to this matter. It’s hard to believe that ice is bad for your teeth, because it is, after all, just water in it’s solid form, but chewing ice can cause tooth fractures.
I have seen quite a few patients, with fractured teeth; most common culprits being chewing on ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy besides bruxism, or the involuntary or habitual grinding of the teeth, typically during sleep. Many people know that chewing on popcorn kernels and crunching on hard candy can cause damage to teeth, however they do not realize that chewing on ice is just as bad. Next time, while enjoying your cold drink, remember ice is for chilling not chewing.
